Western Australia’s Premier Mark McGowan has announced a sudden resignation, He states the reason for exhaustion after many years of service. At the press conference, he stated that he is stepping down as Premier and as a member of Rockingham. McGown has been serving people in politics for over 26 years. He has served as a Premier for more than six years and leader of WA Labor for around 11 and a half years.
Mark expressed his feelings about being drained and lacking the energy required to fulfil his role, particularly after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In his press conference, he emphasized the fact that his decision was not under any pressure or certain condition that promoted it. He says he didn’t want to participate in the next election, scheduled in 20 months, and wanted to give his successor enough time to make their own agenda.
McGowan rejected concerns that his departure would negatively affect the labor party’s prospects in the next election. He shows full confidence in the capabilities of his party members. However, he warns the future Premier about the demanding nature of the role and also hopes for the best for the new Premier. He thinks they would handle it better than him.
